Statement from Lena Tam, Yes on B mailer, January 7, 2010

As an Alameda Councilmember, I know firsthand the costs of maintaining the old navy base. The former base at the west end of Alameda closed 12 years ago and after years of industrial use, the area is full of contaminated soil and deteriorating buildings. Sewers, pipelines and roads continue to decay. Each year, millions of Alameda taxpayer dollars are spent on maintaining crumbling infrastructure. Last year alone, the City of Alameda spent over $14 million.

If we do nothing, Alameda taxpayers will continue to pay for the cleanup and maintenance of the old navy base.

We have an opportunity to change that. Measure B provides a plan that will revitalize the old navy base and ensure it is no longer a drain on Alameda taxpayers.
