The Stronach Group is pursuing development of an auxiliary campus for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the Golden Gate Fields property and, if successful, would relocate the racetrack.

Belinda Stronach, president and chief executive officer of The Stronach Group, said in a letter last week to residents of Albany, California, that her family-run company was pursuing the development. In a follow-up mailing from the city this week, the question, “What will happen to the racetrack?” was answered, “The horse track, grandstand and all related facilities will be demolished…”

Besides winning out over rival bids from Berkeley, Alameda, Richmond, and Oakland, The Stronach Group would also need approval from Albany citizens to alter some zoning restrictions to permit “uses that are not currently allowed in Albany’s Waterfront District.”
