Alameda Journal: Mayor, chamber speak out against ballot initiative

Echoing criticisms expressed recently by the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Beverly Johnson says she is now concerned with the financial impact of SunCal's 2010 ballot initiative for its development of Alameda Point and no longer supports the initiative as it stands.

"It is important for Alameda residents to realize this is a developer-driven initiative," Johnson said in a statement released late Tuesday. "Although I am a strong supporter of development at Alameda Point, this initiative over reaches, usurping the city's ability to negotiate a fair development deal that financially protects the city. After studying the election report, I've come to the conclusion that it is completely one-sided."
