ALAMEDA — Voters have overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure that would have cleared the way for the massive redevelopment of the former Alameda Naval Air Station.

Nearly 85 percent of them said "no" Tuesday to what SunCal Companies suggested as the future of the former base.

SunCal proposed to build about 4,500 new housing units and 3,182,000 square feet of commercial space, as well as a new ferry terminal, library and school at the site. The developer's plan also called for 150 acres of open space.

Alameda residents overwhelmingly rejected the proposal, which was on the ballot Tuesday as Measure B.

Results show that 11,947 voters rejected the measure.

Yes votes totaled 2,120, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
