Teachers could be residing in apartments provided through the Alameda Unified School District as a way to continue living locally amid the Bay Area’s steep housing costs.

The $25 million potential project calls for approximately 70 units to be built on donated land at Alameda Point that would be designated for households with moderate incomes.

Education Housing Partners, a company that works with school districts and other public agencies to promote publicly owned housing for their employees, would oversee construction.

The school district would pay the development costs and recoup its money through rents.

“I think this is absolutely fabulous in terms of what it does for the community and for our teachers and staff and all employees,” school board President Gary Lym said.

The project comes as a survey of Alameda school employees found that nearly 20 percent of respondents indicated they are considering leaving the district within the next five years because they are not satisfied with the cost, availability and proximity of housing.
