Alameda could become a sanctuary city Tuesday as part of the local fallout from President-elect Donald’s Trump promise to crack down on illegal immigration.

The move might literally come at a cost: If the federal government retaliates, Alameda could risk losing millions of dollars in grants, plus the redevelopment of the former Alameda Naval Air Station could be undermined through the loss of other funds, according to City Manager Jill Keimach.

The city received about $3 million in federal grants in fiscal year 2015-16, Keimach said.

Among those receiving money was the Alameda Food Bank and the Midway Shelter, which helps women and children who are victims of homelessness or domestic violence.

Projects that could be threatened if the federal government retaliates over Alameda becoming a sanctuary city include the outpatient clinic and columbarium that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans for the former Navy base, now known as Alameda Point.
