With Gov. Jerry Brown proposing to eliminate local redevelopment agencies to help plug the state's $25 billion budget shortfall, Alameda officials have taken steps that will allow them to use future tax revenues for improvements at Alameda Point and other neighborhoods slated for redevelopment.

The City Council unanimously approved two agreements Tuesday with the city's Housing Authority and the Community Improvement Commission that will allow tax increment dollars to help pay for new affordable housing, road construction and other projects across the Island.

One agreement commits $165 million for upgrades at Alameda Point, while the second provides $64 million for work in other areas, including as part of the "Boatworks" housing project proposed for Oak Street and Clement Avenue.
