San Jose Mercury News: City Council gets update on 'haul-out' for harbor seals, July 7, 2015

A floating dock may be installed temporarily to help draw harbor seals away from a dilapidated dock at Alameda Point and toward the spot where a permanent "haul out" for the animals is proposed.

What remains unknown is whether the seals will use the new structure.

"We could build the Cadillac-version of the haul-out and they may never show up," Nanette Mocanu of the city's community development department told the City Council on Tuesday.

The haul-out would be installed just east of where the notoriously shy animals now bask in the sun and closer toward Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach under the plan proposed by the Water Emergency Transportation Authority.

It also would move the seals farther away from the $50 million ferry maintenance facility that WETA plans to build at the former U.S. Navy base.
